ZOVIRAX (acyclovir) is available in Capsules, Tablets, and Suspension for oral administration. Each capsule of ZOVIRAX contains acyclovir as active ingredient.
Zovirax is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue with inhibitory action against herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1), 2 (HSV-2), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is highly selective due to its affinity for the enzyme thymidine kinase (TK) encoded by HSV and VZV, which converts acyclovir by many steps into acyclovir triphosphate that stops replication of herpes viral DNA.
Zovirax dosage depends upon the condition and medical history. Usual dose for HSV is 800 mg taken every 4 hours, 5 times daily for 7 to 10 days and for Chickenpox is 800mg taken 4 times a day for 5 days.
Zovirax has high efficacy against HSV and VZV infections, excellent clinical safety profile and minimal toxicity, minor risk of drug interactions, very effective for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes and HSV shedding and well-tolerated by most patients.
Less serious side effects of zovirax are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain; flulike symptoms and allergic reactions while serious side effects include pain in your lower back; no or less urination; easy bruising or bleeding; or unusual weakness.
