Lipitor acts by competitively inhibiting HMG CoA reductase, thereby reducing cholesterol synthesis. This results in compensatory increase in plasma cholesterol uptake mediated by increase in LDL receptors. Thus, Lipitor reduces LDL levels in plasma.
Take Lipitor dose as exactly prescribed by your health care professional and is usually taken with or without food, once a day. Recommended starting dose of Lipitor is 10 mg - 20 mg per day, with dosage ranging from 10mg – 80mg per day.
Lipitor is found to be most effective in reducing cholesterol levels in familial and non familial hypercholesterolemias and is also thought to decrease osteoporosis and incidence of some cancers.
Common and less serious side effects of Lipitor include diarrhea, mild nausea or mild muscle pain.
Serious side effects of Lipitor that require emergency medical help include fever, unusual tiredness, nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, unexplained muscle pain or weakness, swelling or weight gain, jaundice, dark colored urine and allergic manifestations.
