Paxil is thought to be acting through potentiating serotonergic activity in central nervous system resulting from inhibition of neuronal reuptake of serotonin, thereby blocking uptake of serotonin by human platelets, changing chemical balance in brain.
Paxil dosage depends on prescription of your Doctor. Paxil is recommended at same time every day and can be taken with or without food.
Usual dosage of Paxil for generalized anxiety disorder, OCD and PTSD is 20 mg per day. While recommended dosage for Panic Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder is 10 mg and 20 mg respectively on daily basis.
Main advantage of Paxil is its effectiveness in treating depression than any of its counter drug. It causes fewer anticholinergic and cardiovascular adverse effects. Paxil usually does not cause hypotension, drowsiness and changes in weight as it does not produce any active metabolite.
Common and less serious side effects of Paxil include nervousness, diarrhea, insomnia, slight weight changes, dry mouth, decreased sex drive and constipation.
More serious or adverse effects of paxil that require urgent medical help are vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, feeling unsteady, hallucinations, loss of coordination, high fever, tremors, shallow breathing and unusual bone pain.
