Zocor competitively inhibit HMG CoA reductase activity, lowering cellular cholesterol concentration. This activates a cellular signaling cascade culminating in activation of sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP), a transcription factor that up-regulates expression of gene encoding LDL receptor. Thus, Zocor increases LDL receptor expression causing increased uptake of plasma LDL, and consequently decreases plasma LDL-cholesterol concentration.
