ZOCOR ACTION MECHANISM
Zocor competitively inhibit HMG CoA reductase activity, lowering cellular cholesterol concentration. This activates a cellular signaling cascade culminating in activation of sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP), a transcription factor that up-regulates expression of gene encoding LDL receptor. Thus, Zocor increases LDL receptor expression causing increased uptake of plasma LDL, and consequently decreases plasma LDL-cholesterol concentration.
Take Zocor as exactly prescribed by your health care professional because its dosage is based on your medical condition, age, response to treatment and other medications. Recommended starting dose of Zocor is 20mg - 40 mg per day, with usual dosage ranging from 5mg - 80mg per day. Zocor is an oral medication and usually recommended with or without meals and generally in evening.
