ROXITHROMYCIN ACTION MECHANISM
Roxithromycin acts by binding to 50S subunit of bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting translocation of peptides. As a result, Roxithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, preventing bacterial growth.
ROXITHROMYCIN DOSAGE
Roxithromycin is an oral medication and its dosage for adults is 150 mg twice a day, either 30 minutes before meals or 2 hours after. While for children, Roxithromycin dose is 2.5 - 5.0 mg/kg body weight, given in two divided doses daily.
ROXITHROMYCIN ADVANTAGES
Roxithromycin is found to be more effective against certain gram-negative bacteria and also has been tested to possess antimalarial activity.
ROXITHROMYCIN SIDE EFFECTS
Most common side effects of Roxithromycin that are not normally serious in nature and pose little discomfort include gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Less serious side effects of Roxithromycin that need medical care include headache, dizziness, vertigo, skin rash and itching, abnormal changes in taste, ringing in ears, tiredness, abdominal pain, flatulence and loss of appetite or abnormal liver function values.
