FAMVIR is used in treatment of recurrent genital herpes and chronic suppressive therapy for recurrent genital herpes. Famciclovir is the active ingredient in FAMVIR tablets and an orally administered prodrug of antiviral agent penciclovir. Famvir tablets are available in three strengths 125mg, 250mg and 500mg.

Famvir undergoes rapid biotransformation to active antiviral compound penciclovir, which inhibits herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2) and varicella zoster virus (VZV).The penciclovir triphosphate formed through series of steps inhibits HSV-2 DNA polymerase competitively. Thus, Famvir selectively inhibits herpes viral DNA synthesis and, therefore its replication.
Famvir is prescribed be taken with or without food. Recommended dosage in adults for treatment of recurrent herpes labialis is 1500 mg of famvir as a single dose, while for recurrent episodes of genital herpes is 1000 mg twice daily for 1 day and for herpes zoster is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days.
