Erythromycin acts by inhibiting protein synthesis and various subsequent structural and functional processes critical for life or replication. Thus, Erythromycin slows down the growth or sometimes kills sensitive bacteria.

ERYTHROMYCIN DOSAGE

Erythromycin is usually recommended for every 6 hours (four times per day) or every 8 hours (three times per day) for 7-21 days. It can be taken with or without food. Erythromycin comes as capsule or long-acting capsule, tablet and long-acting tablet or chewable tablet, liquid and pediatric drops for oral administration.

ERYTHROMYCIN ADVANTAGES

Erythromycin is used in patients found allergic to penicillin and also before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection.

Common side effects of Erythromycin include stomach upset, stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting or mild skin rash.

While serious side effects of Erythromycin that require urgent medical care include severe skin rash and itching, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, unusual tiredness, dark urine, pale stools and vaginal infection.
