ATENOLOL ACTION MECHANISM
Atenolol acts by competing with sympathomimetic neurotransmitters for binding at beta (1)-adrenergic receptors in heart and vascular smooth muscle, thereby inhibiting sympathetic stimulation. As a result, there is reduction of resting heart rate, cardiac output, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and reflex orthostatic hypotension.
ATENOLOL DOSAGE
Atenolol is usually recommended to be taken before meals or at bedtime with full glass of water or as prescribed by your health care professional. Atenolol should be taken even if you don’t feel well because as you stop your symptoms may comeback.
ATENOLOL ADVANTAGES
Atenolol is also used in treatment of anginal chest pain and fast heart rate, prevention of migraine headaches and treatment of certain types of tremors.
ATENOLOL SIDE EFFECTS
Less serious Atenolol side effects include anxiety or nervousness, tired feeling, insomnia or decreased sex drive, impotence or difficulty having an orgasm.
While serious side effects of Atenolol that require emergency medical help include feeling shortness of breath, depression, light-headed feeling or fainting, slow or uneven heartbeats , low fever, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, swelling of your ankles or feet, dark urine, clay-colored stools or jaundice.
